Portrait of Artos Stark

Artos Stark (The Implacable)

Born

Third son of Lord Beron Stark and Lorra Royce, called the Implacable for the cold patience with which he fought. At the Battle by Long Lake in 226 AC, after Raymun Redbeard's axe had felled his elder brother Lord Willam, Artos took up Willam's banner and pressed the wildling host until he met the King-Beyond-the-Wall in single combat. He slew Redbeard before the field was done, and the broken wildlings fled back through the Frostfangs that night. He wed Lady Lysara Karstark of Karhold and got of her twin sons, Brandon and Benjen, both of whom left issue. Artos is the only Stark not himself a Lord of Winterfell to be given a statue in the crypt of Winterfell — set there, the maesters note, by his nephew Edwyle in honor of Long Lake.
