Lord of Casterly Rock and Warden of the West through the long reign of King Daeron II Targaryen, called the Grey Lion in his later years for the iron color his mane took. With his lady Cerissa of House Brax he had two sons, Tybolt his heir and Gerold the Golden, his younger. He held loyally to the Iron Throne when Daemon Blackfyre raised his black banner in 196 AC, and led the host of the west against the rebel Ser Quentyn Ball outside the gates of Lannisport, where he was put to flight; the First Blackfyre Rebellion was ended elsewhere, on the Redgrass Field, but the lions of the Rock had stood for the king. He rode in the great tourney at Ashford Meadow in 209 AC alongside his heir Tybolt and was unhorsed in the first tilt by Leo Longthorn Tyrell of Highgarden, while his son went on to champion the lists. He died not long after in the Great Spring Sickness that carried off the king and so many of his court, leaving the Rock to Tybolt at the dawn of the reign of Aerys I.
