Lord of the Last Hearth and head of House Umber, a giant of a man whose voice is said to carry from the Wall to the White Knife and whose ale-horn is the size of a smaller lord's helm. Bannerman to Winterfell, he answered Lord Eddard's call to muster at Moat Cailin and rode south in the host of the young wolf Robb Stark when word came that the Lord of Winterfell had been taken by the Lannisters.
At Robb's war council he drew steel against his liege over a slight at the table, lost two fingers to the boy's direwolf Grey Wind for his trouble, and afterwards laughed it off and named the boy the King in the North, the first lord to lay sword at Robb's feet and the loudest voice for the crown that followed. He fought at the Whispering Wood and the Camps, took the surrender of the westermen at Oxcross, and held the North's eastern flank through the war that ended at the Twins.
