Second son of King Aegon V the Unlikely and his queen Betha Blackwood, born in 225 AC, a slight and sickly prince who in 240 AC defied his father's matchmaking and eloped with his own sister Shaera, restoring after a long pause the old Valyrian custom of incestuous marriage within the royal house. Of that union came two children, Aerys and Rhaella, whom Jaehaerys in his turn wed to one another at the urging of a woods witch's prophecy that the prince that was promised would issue from their line. He came to the Iron Throne in 259 AC after the Tragedy at Summerhall took his father, his elder brother Duncan the Small, and the old Lord Commander Ser Duncan the Tall together in a single fire. His brief reign was given over chiefly to ending the War of the Ninepenny Kings on the Stepstones, where the host he sent under Lord Ormund Baratheon, with Ser Barristan Selmy in its van, cut down Maelys Blackfyre called the Monstrous and ended the male line of the Black Dragon. Frail in body and short of breath all his life, Jaehaerys ruled but three years before his health gave out, dying in 262 AC and leaving the realm to his son Aerys, second of that name.
