Knight of the green-apple Fossoways of New Barrel, wed to Janna Tyrell, sister to Lord Mace of Highgarden, and so bound by marriage to the great house his own cadet branch served. He rode for Renly Baratheon in the War of the Five Kings and sat at the feast at Bitterbridge where Lady Catelyn Stark came to treat with the would-be king, then bent the knee to Stannis after Renly's death in his pavilion. Beneath the walls of Storm's End he counselled Stannis to accept Ser Cortnay Penrose's challenge of single combat and offered himself for the lists, allowing that he was no match for Lord Bryce Caron or Ser Guyard Morrigen but willing all the same. He was taken on the Blackwater by the freerider Lothor Brune, whose ransom of three green-apple knights, Jon among them, won him the byname Lothor Apple-Eater and a knighthood from the throne.
