Third-born child of King Aenys I Targaryen and Queen Alyssa Velaryon, born in 29 AC and beloved as a boy by the commons of King's Landing for his promising humour. He sat upon Dragonstone with his brother Aegon at his grandfather Aegon the Conqueror's knee when the old king died in 37 AC, and was eight years old when he rode beside his father to Oldtown for King Aenys's anointing by the High Septon. After Aenys died of a wasting in 42 AC the crown was claimed by his uncle Maegor over his elder brother Aegon (then in rebellion as the Uncrowned), and Maegor took young Viserys, by then his late brother's eldest living son, into his household as squire and hostage to keep his mother and remaining brothers in line. When the Dowager Queen Visenya died in 44 AC his mother fled Dragonstone with his younger brother Jaehaerys and sister Alysanne; Maegor in his fury chained Viserys in a black cell and gave him to his confessors, who put him to nine days' torture before the prince died. The king left his body in the courtyard a fortnight, that his mother should be drawn back for the burying, but she did not come. When Jaehaerys I came to his own crown those gaolers and headsmen who had had a hand in his brother's torture were the only men of Maegor's reign exempted from his clemency; their heads and hands were sent to his mother in a chest, and the dowager queen is said to have been pleased with the tokens.
