House Umber of Last Hearth is one of the largest and most northerly of the houses sworn to Winterfell. Their seat sits just south of the Wall, the last great hall before the Gift, and their lands run cold and broad enough that Umber lords are said to count their bannermen by the village rather than by the man.
Lord Jon Umber, called the Greatjon for his size and his temper both, swears himself to King Robb Stark with the loudest oath any feast hall has ever heard, having first tried to draw steel and lost two fingers to Robb's direwolf for his trouble. The Umbers' words are not written in the songs, but the sound of the Greatjon's laughter through a hall is taken to mean much the same thing.
