House Webber

House Webber of Coldmoat is a noble house of the Reach, sworn through House Rowan of Goldengrove to the high lordship of Highgarden. The Webbers were raised up out of small bannermen in the chaotic middle years of Maegor the Cruel's reign, when the king stripped Coldmoat from the ancient Osgreys and granted the fine moated castle on the Chequy Water to a new and more pliant line. The new lords took for their arms a red-spotted white spider on a silver web upon a black field, and the spider has flown above Coldmoat ever since, a quiet provocation to the chequy lions who once raised those walls.

The most famous of the line was Lady Rohanne Webber, called the Red Widow, who held Coldmoat in her own right during the reign of Aerys I after surviving four husbands in quick succession. Hard, clever, and red of hair, she pressed her father's old quarrel with the diminished Osgreys to the edge of war over the Chequy Water itself, and her dispute with Ser Eustace Osgrey of Standfast is recorded in The Sworn Sword. Her late husband Lord Wyman Webber had left a will requiring her to remarry within two years of his death or surrender Coldmoat to her cousin Ser Wendell, and that condition, more than her temper, made Coldmoat a dangerous place to ride into without an offer of one's hand.

By the events of A Game of Thrones House Webber holds Coldmoat still, a comfortable middle-Reach lordship whose banners answer to Lord Rowan and through him to the Lord of Highgarden. They are neither great nor poor; they keep their moated castle, their orchards, their bannermen, and an old and unhealed feud with what little remains of House Osgrey at Standfast just to their west.
